Origin + History
Mangosteen (main-go-steen) is a fruit that comes from an evergreen tree that is grown in Asia, Hawaii, Thailand and Puerto Rico. Mangosteen is a deep, purplish fruit with a flesh that is citrusy, sweet and creamy. This fruit has a very long history and has often been referred to as the "Queen of Fruits," due to folklore that Queen Victoria offered cash reward to anyone that could bring her a Mangosteen.
Today, Mangosteen is more readily available. It The first article on Mangosteen's medicinal properties was written in 1697, by Jacques Garcin, whose name is part of the fruit's scientific designation (Garcinia mangostana). Used for hundreds of years in folk medicines, most modern-day scientific papers have been focused on the active ingredients called xanthones. Xanthones are a recently discovered class of polyphenolic compounds that are biologically active and structurally similar to bioflavanoids. These compounds only occur very rarely in nature, with the majority being found only in two plant families. Only two hundred naturally occurring xanthones have been identified so far, and forty of them happen to be found in Mangosteen!
